Belgrade Fortress, Park and Two Rivers

Парк Калемегдан, also known simply as Kalemegdan, is Belgrade's largest park and most important historical monument. It stands on a 125-metre-high cliff at the junction of the Sava and Danube rivers, with the Belgrade Fortress above the confluence inside the park.

What is Парк Калемегдан Belgrade?

Парк Калемегдан is both a public park and a historical site centred on the Belgrade Fortress. Its position above the meeting point of two rivers explains why this part of Belgrade became important for defence: the fortress occupies the high ground, while the surrounding plateau provided a broad view over the landscape below.

The site is therefore more than a green space. The park and fortress form one historical setting, defined by the cliff, the river junction, and the remains of Belgrade's defensive past.

What can you find inside Парк Калемегдан?

The park covers over 50 hectares. Within its grounds are buildings, archaeological sites, and cultural and historical monuments of national importance.

The Belgrade Fortress is the central feature of this complex. It rises above the Sava and Danube confluence, while the wider park contains the archaeological and historical features that connect the fortress to the ground around it. Why is it called Kalemegdan?

The name Kalemegdan comes from the Turkish words kale, meaning “fort”, and meydan, meaning “field”. Historically, the name applied only to the spacious plateau surrounding the Fortress.

That plateau was used to observe the enemy and prepare for combat. Prince Mihailo Obrenović ordered the conversion of the town field into a park in 1867, and the first works to arrange the town field began in 1869. The conversion into a park took place in the 1880s.
